The Role of Colours in a Tamil Wedding: More Than Just Aesthetic

In many weddings today, colours are chosen based on moodboards, Pinterest references, or personal preference. In a Tamil wedding, colours have meaning.

Yellow is associated with auspiciousness, prosperity, and blessings. This is why turmeric, marigolds, and yellow fabrics are commonly seen in ceremonies.

Green symbolises growth, harmony, and new beginnings — often seen through banana leaves, mango leaves, and traditional garlands.

Red and maroon represent strength, marriage, and sacredness, reflected in silk sarees, temple tones, and wedding backdrops.

Gold is not used for luxury. It represents divinity and abundance, which is why brass elements, lamps, and gold accents are central to the decor.

These colours were never randomly selected. They came from rituals, nature, tradition, and daily life.

When used correctly in wedding decor, these colours create a space that feels culturally grounded and emotionally familiar to everyone attending.

At Weddings by GRE, colour selection is never an afterthought. It is one of the first decisions we make when designing a wedding space, because colours tell the story before the ceremony even begins.

A Tamil wedding should not just look beautiful.

It should feel meaningful.
